Building Digital Twins for Real-Time Analytics and Simulation with Many Data Sources

Workshop Leader - Dr. William Bain, CEO, ScaleOut Software, Inc

This workshop will present a new technique for employing digital twins that focuses on real-time analytics and simulation of large systems with tens, hundreds, or even thousands of data sources. This technique extends the use of digital twins beyond their traditional applications in product lifecycle management and opens the door to addressing a wide range of important challenges. It enables digital twins to track large vehicle fleets, logistics systems, security infrastructures such as power grids and smart cities, airline operations, credit card users, ecommerce shoppers, and countless other applications.

The workshop will start with an overview of the challenges in tracking and modeling large systems with many data sources and explore several example applications. As one example, it will look in depth at how digital twins can be used to track the nation’s freight railway system to catch mechanical failures that might otherwise lead to derailments. Next, the workshop will describe ScaleOut’s object-oriented software architecture for building large collections of digital twins and explain how they can be hosted on an in-memory computing platform to run at scale with high responsiveness. It will explain how managers can use real-time aggregate analytics and visualization to maximize situational awareness when tracking live systems and make predictions when running simulations. Lastly, the workshop will give participants an opportunity to build and run a simulation model using digital twins on their Windows or Linux laptop computers.
