SAFESME: Smart Asset Fast Enablement for SME Equipment
Standards-based digital twin onboarding for SME manufacturing equipment enabling 5-minute commissioning and scalable service transformation.
The SAFESME testbed enables digital transformation for small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises by demonstrating rapid, cost-effective digital twin onboarding without expensive PLC upgrades. This groundbreaking validation combines CESMII's Smart Manufacturing Profile (SMP) and Asset Administration Shell (AAS) standards with Web of Things (WoT) integration to achieve automated commissioning in under 5 minutes per asset, transforming how SME manufacturers approach digital service enablement.
The testbed leverages advanced automation through Prosys Forge tooling and OPC UA data integration to create standardized digital twin models across diverse manufacturing equipment. By implementing WoT APIs on both injection molding machines from Woojin Prime and packaging equipment from Daegu Technopark, the system demonstrates seamless interoperability while maintaining high model alignment and API performance with latency under 300 milliseconds.
Expected outcomes include validated reference architecture for SME digital transformation, demonstrated commissioning automation capabilities, and proven API-based service readiness that enables new business models. The testbed provides scalable solutions for equipment vendors seeking rapid market deployment while establishing best practices that advance global SME digital twin adoption and support Korea's Industry 4.0 export strategy.
The SAFESME testbed contributes to industry advancement in the following ways:
- Standards Integration: Validating seamless combination of CESMII SMP and AAS models with WoT APIs, establishing proven interoperability frameworks for diverse manufacturing environments and advancing standardized digital twin deployment methodologies.
- SME Transformation: Demonstrating cost-effective digital twin onboarding without expensive infrastructure upgrades, creating scalable reference architecture that enables rapid digital transformation for resource-constrained small and medium enterprises globally.
- Automated Commissioning: Establishing automated asset onboarding protocols achieving sub-5-minute commissioning times, advancing industry best practices for rapid deployment and significantly reducing traditional setup complexity and operator requirements.
- Service Monetization: Proving API-based service enablement capabilities for manufacturing equipment vendors, advancing new business model development and demonstrating how digital twins enable scalable service transformation and revenue diversification.
- Global Policy Impact: Aligning standards across DTC, CESMII, IDTA, and Korea's KI4.0 organizations, advancing international collaboration and supporting export-ready equipment development that promotes global SME digital twin adoption.
- Technology Validation: Demonstrating real-world performance metrics including 90% successful SMP-AAS mapping alignment and sub-300ms API latency, establishing benchmarks for industrial digital twin performance and advancing technology maturity assessments.
