Working Groups are the places where our members collaborate to address the technology and business needs of specific industries and technologies. In the spirit of intra-consortium communications, we will periodically update this digest to summarize current Working Group activities for our members.

To continue driving thought leadership, innovation, and best practices, we are launching three new working groups! Express your interest in participating by completing the working group interest forms below:

Cross-Consortia AI Working Group

This Working Group will focus around four initial areas: Ontology / Semantics, Interoperability, AR / VR, Responsible AI, emphasizing Generative AI across all focus areas.
With committed representation from four Consortia, pre-meetings with proposed co-leads for each area are already in early shaping discussions.

This Working Group will focus around four initial areas: ClimaTech, Circular Economy, Compliance/Assurance and Societal/Governance.

Pharma 5.0 Working Group

This Working Group will focus around four initial areas: drug discovery, drug development, drug manufacturing, and regulatory compliance leveraging key technologies such as digital twins, AR/VR, AI, intelligent automation, and advanced manufacturing.

Congratulations on your accomplishments to date – you are having a direct impact on the growth of the digital twin industry! To participate in the integrated DTC organization, IIC members must submit the DTC Membership Application by March 1, 2024 


Academia & Research

Focus:

  • Help to establish digital twin programs within universities and other educational institutions.
  • Further the development of digital twin education, training, and capability building through global outreach.
  • Encourage private industry to influence current and future research with academic partners.

Get involved with current projects:

  • We are seeking out compelling digital twin research opportunities and proof-of-concept/pilot programs with communities of like interest and Industry partners.
  • We are identifying implementation scenarios, evaluating digital twin models, methodologies, and enabling technologies.

Ways to participate:

  • Contribute to the development of digital twin curriculum for college-level courses.
  • Contribute to the development of digital twin training certification workshops/courses.

Aerospace & Defense

Focus:

  • Help organizations improve operational efficiency, resiliency, and sustainability.
  • Reduce maintenance costs, optimize equipment design and capacity, and improve performance.

Get involved with current projects:

  • We are looking at the applicability of digital twins across the lifecycle in various industries, including land, maritime, air, cyber, and space.
  • We are looking at ways to improve the performance of airplanes, ships, ground vehicles, satellites, infrastructure, and so on using digital twin technology and methodology.

  • Contribute to the A&D Research & Technology Gap Analysis white paper.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of the Aerospace-Defense industry day event.

Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO)

Focus:

  • Understand how digital twins can create value in the global infrastructure and raise awareness of the importance of the technology to the future of business.
  • Create market demand for related products and services to accelerate the market.

Get involved with current projects:  

  • We are delivering standardized definitions, protocols and methodologies that enable infrastructure industries to create, apply, and use precise, knowledge-rich digital twins that replicate, simulate and evaluate the physical twin.
  • We are facilitating the creation of an open, interoperable information classification system based within the digital twin. This will help drive a deeper understanding of how digital twins can enable new opportunities, create efficiencies, and reach sustainability goals.

Capabilities & Technology

Focus:

  • Helps to create and identify the foundational elements and building blocks for digital twins
  • Contributes to standard requirements, open source and cross-functional use cases
  • The group and its corresponding sub-groups focus on composable frameworks, business maturity models, system reference architectures, security & trust, simulation & modeling, and spatial & visual data.
  • Highlights the Technology Showcase for digital twin use cases and promotes the Technology Spotlight, focusing on DTC member evolution.

  • Contribute to developing the next version of the Capability Periodic Table

FinTech

Focus:

  • While digital twin use cases are mostly developed from an operational performance perspective and for a specific domain or vertical, Financial Technology trends towards intangibles. FinTech digital twins work on domain-agnostic levels. Our Working Group faces the challenge of turning these intangibles into tangibles.

  • We are publishing opinions and position statements related to regulations, policies, and definitions.
  • We are increasing ecosystem visibility through use cases, success stories, and Value Innovation Platforms.
  • We are identifying gaps in standards and standards requirements, and eyeing reference implementations for digital twins.

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of the FinTech industry day event.

  • Digital twins in oil & gas, mining & metals, water, solar, and energy/utilities.
  • Deliver standardized definitions, protocols, and methodologies that increase operational efficiency to create more live-able, workable, and sustainable communities.

  • We are looking at ways to apply twins during the engineering, design, construction, deployment, and operations phases of the lifecycle.
  • We are evaluating methods to improve production, predict and detect failures, and improve safety.

  • Contribute to the development of the Natural Resources digital twin Capabilities Periodic Table.
  • Contribute to the white paper “Power Systems Subgroup Catastrophic Events and Their Impacts on the Power Grid” which will include use cases and adoption/implementation guidance for power/microgrids.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of the new Renewable Energies subgroup.

Security & Trustworthiness Subgroup

Focus:

  • Ensure the security of digital twins worldwide.
  • Digital twin security as a team sport, in both the technical and business domains.

Get involved with current projects:

  • We are endeavoring to understand the threat of cyberattack, supply chain fraud, mistakes, missed maintenance and other issues that threaten the integrity of the digital twin system, and erode trust in the data it produces and consumes.
  • We are introducing the need for a way of thinking about digital twin security and trustworthiness where risk and responsibility are shared. Actions by one will have impacts on others.

Ways to participate:

  • Submit a digital twin use case/case study for group review.
  • Contribute to the development of the Security & Trustworthiness digital twin Capabilities Periodic Table.
  • Contribute to the white paper “Holistic Business Capabilities of Digital Twin Based System of Systems: Qualification and Validation Criteria to Ensure Digital Twin Model Quality and Model Integrity.”

Telecommunications

Focus:

  • Investigate how digital twins are providing a 360-degree view of network performance and usage patterns.
  • Analyze how digital twins are enabling improved analysis, optimal coverage, accurate predictive analytics, and effective management approaches.

Get involved with current projects:

  • We are looking at how organizations, by using a virtual model of an entire area or process, can visualize and test out different initiatives, making data-driven decisions based on billions of network performance data points.
  • We are evaluating these initiatives more precise enterprise-level analytics and location intelligence, to help identify optimal implementation scenarios.
  • For instance, digital twins can simulate the propagation of radio waves in various environments and identify the optimal placement of antennas and repeaters for maximum coverage and signal strength. A digital twin of a satellite communications system or cellular tower can monitor its performance in real time and identify potential issues or faults before they become critical.
