Frequently Asked
Questions
A digital twin is a virtual representation of real-world entities and processes, synchronized at a specified frequency and fidelity.
- Digital twin systems transform business by accelerating holistic understanding, optimal decision-making, and effective action.
- Digital twins use real-time and historical data to represent the past and present and simulate predicted futures.
- Digital twins are motivated by outcomes, tailored to use cases, powered by integration, built on data, guided by domain knowledge, and implemented in IT/OT systems.
The foundational elements of the definition are captured in the first sentence: the virtual representation, the real-world entities and processes it represents, and the mechanism by which the virtual and real-world entities are synchronized.
Digital Twin Consortium is a program of Object Management Group dedicated to the widespread adoption of digital twin technology and the value it delivers. Object Management Group (OMG) has built and managed programs for over 30 years. We invite companies to become founding members who will oversee the creation and growth of the program. Through cross-industry collaboration, the Consortium will help enterprises maximize the benefits of digital twin technology – sharing within a member ecosystem the lessons learned and opportunities uncovered within the virtual world and applying them to the physical world.
Digital Twin Consortium recognizes the need for technology standards in digital twin innovation but will not develop standards. It will influence standards by deriving requirements that will be submitted to international standards' development organizations, such as Object Management Group and ISO/IEC.
This new program launched in May 2020. Vendors, researchers and consumers of digital twin technologies are invited to join Digital Twin Consortium through annually renewable membership.
Digital Twin Consortium is formed as a group under Object Management Group, Inc., a not-for-profit trade association, as set out in section 501(c)(6) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. A Steering Committee comprising founders and elected representatives provide the leadership and governance for Digital Twin Consortium. Activities are organized into groups led by member representatives.
Organizations committed to using and learning about digital twin technologies to gain enhanced insight into the performance of their processes, systems, services, and products in multiple real-time applications and environments to improve efficiency and quality.
A digital twin technology explosion is about to occur. Organizations on the forefront of deploying digital twin technologies are already reaping significant benefits and discovering new opportunities that are changing their business models. Those who implement the technology within their enterprises will gain a competitive advantage over those who do not. The technology enables companies to head off problems before they occur, prevent downtime, improve the customer experience, develop new opportunities, drive innovation and performance and plan for the future using simulations. Members of Digital Twin Consortium collaborate with experienced technologists, physical product experts and data scientists, across multiple industries to learn from each other and develop and apply best practices which accelerate the adoption of digital twin technology across their enterprises.
Users of digital twins should join to reduce the risk of using digital twins within their business and maximize the benefits of digital twins by leveraging the Digital Twin Consortium ecosystem. This includes working with leaders in the field, being at the forefront of innovation and driving requirements for standards.
Vendors of digital twin technologies should join to support their customers in deploying digital twins successfully. They can influence and leverage the Digital Twin Consortium ecosystem and improve the visibility of their products and services. Members of Digital Twin Consortium collaborate with experienced technologists, physical product experts and data scientists, across multiple industries to learn from each other and develop and apply best practices that accelerate the adoption of digital twin technology across their customer base. Vendors apply the knowledge gained through collaboration within the Digital Twin Consortium to develop new revenue streams and develop enhancements to existing products and services to drive the innovation of new business and new business models.
